All these years, and I still dread them An extra hour to build the courage Pull up, hearing laughter and so very much want to drive on Push the unlocked door and pick my way through someones home Puzzled smiles from people I dont know Slightly forced, polite conversations But more familiar faces soon arrive The recent storm and work help fill awkward, silent gaps Several times still, that urge to escape quietly Then jokes and laughter flow more freely The luminous humanity of people Ive known a year Yet have known so little Time warps and folds, gently tugging at our consciousness Tired teacher eyes droop And kids are found sleeping on chairs Colleagues have become new friends, old friends drawn closer And a most pleasant evening once again proves We have nothing to fear, but fear itself Introvert at a party
