Allam Iqbal Open University, Pakistan Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is the first Open University in Asia. AIOU is a unique institution in Pakistan because of its philosophy, system, approach, functions and overall structure. The University with its main campus at Islamabad and huge network of regional centers spread all over the country is serving its clientele all over Pakistan and in the Middle East. AIOU is a Distance Education institution, which provides multi disciplinary education from basic to doctoral level programs. Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) was founded in 1974 as Peoples Open University. It was later renamed as Allama Iqbal Open University in 1977. The central campus of AIOU is situated in H-8, Islamabad Pakistan and it has several regional campuses both inside (even to the remotest parts) and outside Pakistan (especially from Middle East countries and central Asian States for Overseas Pakistani students). Although University has national status of offering various programs through non-formal education systems and maturing for more than last 30 years. The academic year in AIOU comprises on bi-annual semester system, Spring (April to September) and Autumn (October to March). AIOU disseminate education in two broader medium of instructions (Urdu and English), while it also teaches several other foreign languages (Arabic, French etc.) as subjects in different academic programs starting from SSC, HSSC, graduate, post graduate, masters, doctorate (also including different diploma, and/or ceritificates). The university also holds bi-annual publications of Pakistan Journal of Distance Education and Journal of Social Sciences. AIOU issues several self-explanatory books mostly published by National Book Foundation. The university has large set of departements in faculties of social science & Humanities, Basic & Applied Science, Education, and Mass Education. All the students, regardless they are from which department and from which formation, or they are currently attached or a part of alumni, can join.
