Almary Green Anglian Combination League Division 4 SPROWSTON ATHLETIC RESERVES 1 V 3 REDGRAVE RANGERS 27/09/2014 Redgrave pulled together a squad for this weeks journey to Sprowston Athletic Reserves of shall we say “The young, The old and The infirm.” That’s probably being a little bit harsh on the majority of all those who fought out a terrific victory. As again this season The Redgrave squad dug deep into the resources and played out a well deserved game to grab all 3 points. From the start Redgrave took control and the back 4 of Andy Kemp(first game for 2 years), Will Nevitt(improving with every game), Charlie Nevitt(just turned 50) and Will Izod(doing multiple lung bursting forrays forward) looked confident and together with the impressive Jon Jenkins in goal supported the midfield human dynamo Phil Weiss in producing some sparkling football going forward. After 32 minutes Charlie Nevitt passed the ball to Will Izod deep in the Redgrave half Izod then ran on one of his direct excursions beating 4 tackles before getting into the oppositions penalty area and unleashing a powerful shot low across the keepers body into the left corner to go 1-0 up. Sprowston then stepped up a gear and pressed Redgrave and 5 minutes later equalised from a shot from 25 yards which deflected off Charlie Nevitt’s thigh wrong footing Jenkins. The Redgrave man of the match then made 3 one on one saves to keep the scores level at the break. With Rangers now playing up the hill and the opposition using there youthful bench to keep the tempo high the game was getting stretched and again Jenkins in the Redgrave goal had more work to do to keep his team on level terms. Redgrave growing into the counter attacking mentality then broke forward on 52 minutes and a ball from Luke Martin held up well on the edge of the oppositions penalty area by Denny Robles resulted in a Sprowston defender impeding the Ecuadorean’s progress giving away a direct free kick. Nick Apps stepped up and arrowed his strike waist height into the net to give Redgrave the lead once more. Sprowston then pressed even higher onto the visitors and produced a number of clear cut chances which through bad choice or luck failed to get past the impressive Jenkins. Ash Thompson then came off after giving everything he had to give and Redgrave reverted to a 4-5-1 and looked a lot happier defensively as this stemmed the flow somewhat of the constant pressure coming through the midfield area. Marek Gramza growing into his favoured centre forward position had a fantastic chance to put the game safe however his hesitation allowed a block and the ball bounced out. With 5 minutes remaining Jenkins thumped a kick deep onto the Sprowston right back and he failed to deal with the pressure of Anth Bryant who took the ball past the committed Sprowston keeper and curled his shot high into the right hand corner to bring the points home for Redgrave. On the final whistle, in the showers and into the bar afterwards Redgrave celebrated in style. Couldn’t ask for anymore lads. Thank you very much
