Almost €50 million of Property Tax Revenue Lost to Dublin City - TopicsExpress

Almost €50 million of Property Tax Revenue Lost to Dublin City Council November 4, 2014 Press release from Cllr Cieran Perry. As campaigners against the Property Tax had predicted, the net gain to Local Authorities from this tax will be minimal. Dublin City Council budget figures show that of the €70.2 million to be collected in 2015 the council will only receive €4.2 million, less than 6% of the money raised. €16.5 million will be distributed to other Local Authorities as an equalization measure and Central Government will use the remaining €49.5 million as a substitute for previous capital grants. Independent councillor Cieran Perry said “The Property Tax was sold to people with the promise of extra funding for local services. Communities were told that this extra income for Local Authorities would pay for increased services such as road repairs, street cleaning, parks and other communal facilities. This was clearly a lie as the Government never had any intention of using the revenue raised to fund improved services.” Cllr Perry and other anti-Home Tax campaigners predicted at the time that the money raised from the Local Property Tax would be used to pay off the bondholders and bank debts. The release of these figures shows that the skepticism of the anti-Home Tax campaigners was well founded. Cllr Perry continued “we were accused of scaremongering when we told people that the Home Tax was simply a revenue raising measure to continue paying the bondholders and banks. It is obvious now that we were absolutely correct. I now call on Labour and Fine Gael to rescind the decision to grab the vast amount of money raised by the Local Property Tax and to do as they promised – to use the money to allow Local Authorities to fund increased local services for the benefit of local communities rather than the faceless bondholders and banks” For further information or comment contact Cieran on 087-9393331 or cieranperry@gmail
