Almost all Americans remember twelve years ago today, when the largest terrorist attack on American soil shattered our sense of security, September 11, 2001. A new generation of Americans who did not remember Pearl Harbor suddenly knew the shock of an attack on U.S. soil. On that day nearly three thousand people lost their lives – fathers, wives, brothers, daughters. Many more have given their lives in the years since the attack as they have fearlessly joined in the fight against terrorism around the world. Let us remember the sacrifices of these men and women, and the men and women in uniform today, still protecting our rights, both at home and overseas. Because of them, since 9/11 at least 51 terrorist plots against our country (that we know of) have been stopped and we are no longer threatened by Osama bin Laden. A quote from former mayor of NYC, Rudy Giuliani sums up how many Americans view the aftermath of September 11: "The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic, and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom."
