Although there were ancient Black people in the region, the Black people in the Northern Andean countries of South America today are there as the result of enslavement by the Spanish. Many of these Black people, like those in the Potosi silver mines of Bolivia, were literally worked to death. People in Bolivia have told me personally that they can still hear the ghostly picks and shovels of those poor Africans in these mines today.
