“Am I a suspect, Detective Fallon?” Her voice sharpened. - TopicsExpress

“Am I a suspect, Detective Fallon?” Her voice sharpened. “Should you be?” “No. And the video should tell you as much.” I heard myself getting annoyed in spite of my effort to stay calm. “So why are you treating me like one?” “How do you mean? We were just talking.” “Detective Fallon,” I said, more self-righteously than I really wanted to sound. “If you’ve done as much checking up on me as you’re trying to show me you’ve done, then you know I’m not stupid.” “That’s true, Génet. You’re not.” “And so I have to assume that you’re dropping little cues on me to find out just how stupid I’m not.” “Very astute.” “So why? Why, if I’m not a suspect, are you testing me like this?” This time, I think she let me hear her smile. Kinda like a shark, or a cat with an especially fat and stupid mouse. “Because, Génet, if you’re as smart as you seem to be, and you’ve watched as many cop-shows as I suspect you probably have watched, then you know that everyone’s a suspect and every bit of information matters.” We both let that sink in for a moment. “And that,” I said, “is why I want my lawyer present when we meet up.” “That’s wise,” she replied. “Not because you’re in trouble, but because we have no idea where these sorts of conversations will take us.” “True.” All of a sudden, I felt so cold that the one little word was all I could say. The ramifications of every potential wrong word seemed to rush in to tackle me. I needed to get hold of Frank again… ____________________________ And a 3100-word day finishes my November leg on Red Shoes, the NaNoWriMo project that has become a full-fledged novel-in-progress. I hit the 50,000-work goal last week, but wanted to see how far I could get by the end of the month. Given my other time-sensitive projects, a final total of 53,120 is all I managed by today. I will, however, keep working on this book. Ive loving it, and all the input I have received on it tells me this ones a winner. Red Shoes will probably come in at around 120,000 words when completed, but Im still having a blast with it, and will probably post more updates as it develops outside the NanoWriMo continuum. Thanks everyone. And congratulations to everybody else who made it to the finish line as well.
