Am I the only one who is sick of heavy handed Anti-Bad-Behavior of the week propaganda? The flavor of the week is texting. The problem is that police departments and others are using misleading emotional appeals to artificially inflate the scale of the problem. This hurts the message. Texting while driving can be bad, but if driving is your first priority, and you are aware of what is going on around you (there are some roads and times it is a terrible idea) there is a pretty good chance you can safely do some muti tasking within reason. We all know this is true. Therefore when we are told that every text will lead to instant death of us and our loved ones and puppy dogs, it seems a bit over the top and we ignore it. That said distracted driving, particularly in high-traffic areas, is the number one cause of accidents. The PSA should go like this: If you are going to text and drive, dont do it in high-traffic areas, on narrow roads, at high speed, or during any interactions with other vehicles. The resulting times are few, but the above statement is true, and reasonable.
