Am I the only one who wasnt super impressed with American Sniper? SPOILER ALERT Im talking about its quality as a film - nothing with regards to the true story - Ill let you get your Go Team Murica on with regards to that (though I suggest you do some research on him regardless aside from his kill count). Regardless, he was a true badass, Ill give you that. Im referring to the subpar graphics that looked like they were created in Blender, the acting that felt forced and unnatural, the music queues that never seemed to flow with the scene, and the feeling that the film was riding on the hopes that Americans would forgive these shortcomings simply because of the character Bradley Cooper was portraying? The aerial shots of cities and convoys that were so dated looking, Battlefield 4 would outshine it on a bad day... The fact that Chris Kyle never even met or shot the other sniper the movie tried to focus on as an antagonist in real life to keep the plot moving forward seemed a bit... forced, and drawn out, very Hollywood-ized... The backstory on that sniper having a family too was covered in one 10 second scene, with a slow pan to his Olympic win in a framed photograph... That last scene with the bullet time slow-mo of the round flying through the air, cut into a back and forth shot of the shooter and the target with windblown debris fluttering around in real time... I dont know. I guess they maybe spent too much money bulking Cooper up to spend anything on the graphics or editing of the film. One area the film DID shine in, was its portrayal of the effects of war and PTSD on our troops. I dont think Ive seen a movie ever put any time into showing the VA or the Wounded Warriors at work the way this film did. My primary hope for this film is that I hope it helps bring to light that, no matter how badass our troops are, they will always need their friends, families and fellow Americans to be there, to support them and to let them know they are not alone. We need to let our friends and brothers and sisters who have fought know that we are there for them. Even if the government itself isnt making good on its end of the deal for our people. Because of that saving grace, I give this film a 7/10.
