Amazing story Sometimes there are things happening that are hard to believe but seem to be true. I want to share such a story with you. At our place we have two stallions and little Tibor, who is gelded last year. I noticed that I have become more insecure then I want and tried to fight this stupid fear, because it is fear, but it didnt work. My issue was that I was able to ride the horses but did not dare to you outside. Since I am always preaching about take your horse outside because that’s their nature to travel it was pretty lousy that this step was hard for me. What was the issue, the issue for me was that they are stallions and since I am alone it was giving me doubts. Another thing was that I did not like it to keep them separated all the time. Juicioso (the grey one) is very impulsive and he is very persistent in his contact with Rociero and also with little Tibor. Little Tibor is experienced with big horses and had a friend in the past but with as well Juicioso as with Rociero I doubted on the relationship. Many times I saw that the little Tibor, who is only 86 cm tall, had to defend himself and also saw that sometimes there were marks on the legs of Juicioso. It seemed that he could get along with Rociero but several times Juicioso had marks. Now it might sound like Tibor was the issue, but I have it noticed it before that big horses, stallions, do not see little ponies as real horses. They want to mate with the little ones and I can imagine that this causes aggression. Anyway this all together made me decide to geld Juicioso because great stallions make good gelding and what I like most on horses is how they socialize. It was a very hard decision and it gave me many sleepless nights. So in the beginning of October he was gelded. When the vets came to do their job I decide to let Rociero and Tibor in the field next to where the castration was done. I wanted them to be more or less together, yes there was a fence in between but horses need horses. During the castration Rociero was grazing but it was very clear that he was observing the whole operation. All the time his head was towards the happening. He saw Juicioso go down, be gelded and get up afterword. Little Tibor also observed it all and stayed very close to the fence to not miss any second of the happening. Juicioso was very dizzy when he stood up and my husband kept him on a halter so he could interfere if that was necessary. The castration only took 20 minutes but the whole situation took about 3 hours. That is including the wake up. The instructions of the vet were to let the horses 24/7 in the field, and the weather was pretty good so when it all seemed to go well with Juicioso we let them in the big field. Little Tibor was the company for Juicioso. The next day I noticed something strange, there was a change in behavior, actually a big change. When I was in the field where I observe the horses I saw that Rociero was not friendly anymore towards the neighbor horses. Before he was getting along pretty well with them, they made contact over he fence and there was never any sign of aggression or whatever. He was always very enthusiastic when they came in the field and was always very kind, gentle and curious. But now it was different, he was really attacking them. It amazed me to see that and I decided to take some photos of this behavior before I turned on the electric fence. After all we do not want any horse to fight. I am not sure and I am not a dreamer or a fantasy person, what you see is what you get. But this was very remarkable and when I do an interpretation of the behavior then I can only conclude that Rociero was aware of the injury of Juicioso and was defending his wounded friend. After all protecting the herd is one of the main things that stallions do in the wild. To me it was mind breaking why he did this all of a sudden, but like I said I do have the idea that it was because he saw his friend being injured. Amazing and what a gesture that is.
