I voted yesterday in Hailey - there was no line so I didnt have to - TopicsExpress

I voted yesterday in Hailey - there was no line so I didnt have to wait to learn that because I have moved in the past 2 years, and because I now need to show my DL to vote - it was necessary for me to show PROOF of my new residence. So now not only who I was but proof of where I now live. Great - i walked across the street to the DMV, there was ONE person ahead of me. I PAID $15 to have my DL updated with my new address picture etc, it took about 30 minutes. Walked back to vote and this time waited in line for one person ahead of me who had an even more complicated issue which required attention with a manager, so I waited for about 10 minutes for that person to register to vote, I suppose a County restriction. Anyway, I presented my paper work and new Temporary DL which took Leslie who was also answering the phone, and entering my data in the system about another 10 minutes. Total time and cost to vote $15. and about 80 minutes to vote. I asked Leslie why have I not had to show my ID before, when voting. Leslie said the law had changed in the last 2 years. Humm so much for making it easy to vote. Oh well - one hour or so and 15 bucks what the hell, not that big of a deal. However, if this had happened in Boise it would have meant driving for 30 minutes to a DL Bureau and waiting for probably around an hour or two if at any time other than 7:30 in the morning. And of course it would have meant driving back to my polling place another 30 minutes and if on election day would have meant waiting in line for much longer. Having voted there before probably about 3-4 hours of waiting and driving about $5.00 in fuel so I could vote. Double all of that again - if i lived in major metropolis and you see how difficult it can be to simply vote. And remember because of government budget cuts and shut downs of offices that serve the people in major areas wait times can be excruciatingly long. Also, remember the DL office in our County is now closed on Friday.
