Amazing to me. The people that were in all the traffic jams are still there this morning at 4AM. People have been in their cars for14 hours. As cars run out of gas they are abandoned causing even more clogging. We had an ice storm in Atlanta in 1982 that is considered the worst ever. I lived in Cobb County 17 miles north on I-75 from work in Buckhead near West Paces Ferry and I-75 and knew I couldnt get home. A friend invited me to her apartment about two miles south of work. Work let out early around 3PM. We finally went to her apartment about 2 hours later because of the ice and traffic. Last night a friend of mine posted his progress home on FB. Most business let out at 1PM. The problems: everyone left at the same time; people selfishly tried to avoid the traffic congestion by driving on the emergency lanes and got stuck because of ice or accidents. So trucks couldnt salt the roads and emergency vehicles couldnt help people. Luckily my friend got home after more than 8 hours. But the majority are still stuck in the SAME traffic jam as yesterday. Home Depots around the city invited people to stay there as a shelter. Many children are sleeping in the gyms of their schools. Some got stranded in their buses. I lived in Syracuse NY for about 17 years. Syracuse gets about 12 feet of snow a year. A two inch snow is no big deal. But when it snows people drive slowly so there are very few accidents. And they do not block emergency lanes. The salt trucks do their job and everything works. When severe storms happen, they stagger closings so that the roads dont get overwhelmed. We had another big snow in 2011 in Atlanta. It snowed more than yesterday, but people didnt all leave at the same time and the situation didnt get as bad as this time. Parents are desparate because they want to see their children home safely.
