American Fire Update, 1845 hrs, 8/21/13 Location: PlacerCounty,California Date of Fire Start: August 10, 2013 4:35 p.m Cause: Under Investigation Size: 15,738 acres Containment: 63 percent Management: California Interagency Incident Management Team 4 Cooperating Agencies: PlacerCounty Sheriff’s Department,PlacerCounty, Placer County Water Agency, CHP,ForesthillSchool, Foresthill Fire Department. Fire Status: Crews continue to mop up containment lines on the west side of the fire. On the north and north-east edge, fire crews continue to hold and improve containment lines and prepare for firing operations if needed. Efforts to contain the fire along the more difficult steep and hazardous terrain on the east and south-east perimeters continues with crews using direct fire attack methods where possible, roll out of burning material remains a concern. Aircraft are supporting crews on the ground when smoke conditions permit flying. The fire is established in Antoine, Manilla, Scewrauger andCavanahCanyons, consumption of heavy fuels will continue to contribute to smoke in surrounding areas. Yesterday afternoon, a thunderstorm began to develop south-east of the area resulting in erratic winds over the fire area. A RedFlag Warning remains in effect until 11:00 pm Wednesday. Robinson Flat Campground and Duncan Peak Lookout remain closed. Fire Behavior Moderate fire spread in surface fuels with occasional single tree torching. Firing operation in DIV R from H/R break working towards Robinson Flats with good consumption. Significant Events Significant fire growth in DIV Z due to fire position and canyon alignment; Good progress in DIV A,DIV B,and DIV H, Initiated burning operations in DIV R. The Incident is also supporting Initial Attack requests over the TFR footprint. The fire area remains under NWS Red Flag Warning through 2300 Wednesday for combination lightning and dry fuels. Outlook Growth Potential : High Terrain Difficulty: Extreme Remarks Fire is in an old growth timber stand with no recorded fire history, in steep, hazardous terrain with dry, heavy fuels.Consumption of heavy fuels continues to create heavy smoke. The Forest, timber industry,local agencies, and private landowners are collaborating to implement strategy and tactics which will minimize impacts to high value timber resources, Western States Trail, watershed, and local communities.
