American Jewish Committee has sent a letter to Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the United States, Elin Suleymanov regarding the arrest of the human rights defender Rasul Jafarov who was arrested on August 2. The letter expressing concern over the human rights defender’s arrest was sent by the Committee on August 6, shortly after the arrest. Despite of the fact that the Committee has not received any response from the embassy for more than a month, it continues efforts to get a reply. Note that Rasul Jafarov was arrested on August 2 and is charged with tax evasion, illegal business and abuse of office. Amnesty International has recognized Rasul Jafarov as a prisoner of conscience.
