American Songwriter Magazine asked me to write an essay for them. They had a few suggested topics, but the main thrust of it all was What is it like to be an artist, and more than that, try to win your daily bread from it? I made three or four attempts to write a straight answer, but the direct statements and clear lines of right and wrong being drawn just didnt capture the flexible war of compromise that juicing your sacred talents forces an artist to wage within his own mind. So I did what I do. I coded a work-around. Me vs. me vs. true art. There are no right ways to read this thing. I am still trying to figure out what it means to me. See ya in Sturgis! - Rod
