American basic cable and satellite television channel BET last night unveiled its nominations for the annual BET Awards and six of the continent’s music leading lights made the cut. Davido (Nigeria), Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Mafikizolo (South Africa), Sarkodie (Ghana), Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) and Toofan (Togo) will fight out amongst themselves for the Best International Act: Africa category. No, they are not going against Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Drake and Jay Z, nope, they still have a long way to go before they can reach those heights but this is still a major boost for the artistes. As for Kenya, we are nowhere to be found though we can be consoled by the fact that Camp Mulla were the first from the country to be nominated in 2012. We would have expected to see Sauti Sol on that list but they are yet to hit it big across our borders. Jay Z, Beyoncé and Drake lead the nominations with five nods each. The man of the moment, Pharrell Williams is next together with Best New Artist nominee August Alsina with four nominations apiece. “This year’s nominees represent the best of the culture,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials, in a statement. “It’s great to see our talented new artists right alongside our more beloved ones with long careers.” The BET Awards 2014 will air live on Sunday, June 29 on BET from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles and will be hosted by legendary comedian Chris Rock.
