Americas two greatest lawyers of the 20th Century. One was a lawyer who was later known as maximum John, during his service as a Federal District Court Judge. If you were guilty, he threw the book at you. A Republican first appointed by Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt to the Justice Department in 1944, he sent the White House into panic mode during Watergate, because he treated members of Richard Nixons Administration with contempt for their betrayal of the public trust and criminal activity. He was the object of continuous attacks by Republican Politicians, including Ronald Reagan. He said Justice isnt about politics and it isnt a popularity contest: it is about right and wrong. The second was Americas highest paid and best lawyer of the 20th Century, who spent his last years fighting the death penalty because he considered if morally wrong. His most famous case in 1924, when he was promised a 1,000,000.00 to defend two murderers who had confessed. In one of the greatest courtroom speeches in history, everyone in the court broke down as a result of his eloquent plea for their lives. Instead of the death penalty, which the huge crowds clamored for outside of the courtroom, the defendants got life plus 99 years. The families reneged on their promise, but he did receive $80,000.00. He used that money to pay the expenses of poor clients in his crusade against the death penalty.
