Left us on this day (Sept. 28) in 1968: American radio DJ Dewey Phillips (heart failure, age 42), best remembered as one of rocknrolls pioneering disk jockeys; his on-air persona was a speed-crazed hillbilly, with a frantic delivery & entertaining sense of humor; he had a keen ear, embracing both black & white music & mixing up R&B, country, boogie-woogie, gospel, jazz & Sun Records artists; in July 1954, while broadcasting his show Red Hot & Blue out of Memphis WHBQ/560, he was the first DJ to play the young Elvis Presleys debut Sun Records release, Thats All Right/Blue Moon Of Kentucky; Dewey also briefly hosted Top Shelf in the mid-50s, an afternoon TV music program out of Memphis that predated American Bandstand; the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis is loosely-based on Deweys life & career…
