Amigos, Tonight (Wed. March 26) the City Council is holding a public hearing at 7 pm on the proposed ordinance (drafted by former councilor Chris Calvert) that would further restrict and criminalize busking in downtown Santa Fe and at the plaza. The public hearing is in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 200 Lincoln Ave. Please come attend and speak out in support of Santa Fes working musicians and street performers who help make downtown Santa Fe a lively, creative and fun place for locals and tourists alike! Buskers and their allies are asking for the proposed ordinance to be tabled and redrafted with more dialogue and cooperation from the busking community. Here is the draft ordinance and legislative summary: santafenm.gov/archive_center/document/9446 ABQ Journal reported on the issue in February: abqjournal/359234/news/buskers-santa-fe-officials-discuss-regulations.html J. Michael Combs from the Santa Fe Buskers Alliance recently wrote: Kansas city, Austin, Albuquerque and Taos are also the scene of low-level to dramatic harassment of buskers. This is nothing new -- in the days of Babylon, street performer tongues were sometimes torn out if they got out of line. I propose that anyone interested send me a reply. I am calling for buskers in Santa Fe to band together, as we did 8 years ago, which resulted in our ability to work here. It took work to obtain these rights, and it will take some work to protect, maintain and expand them. J. Michael Combs
