Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou - TopicsExpress

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. alsa.org/ Challenges like this one are important because they help raise awareness for illnesses that are otherwise ignored by the general public. However, it is equally important to keep in mind, that what thousands of Facebook users across the country are doing barely scratches the surface to finding a cure. Whether you participate in the challenge itself, or simply enjoy watching your friends douce themselves in ice water, please take the time to educate yourselves on the nature of the disease, what is being done to combat it, and what can be done to better the everyday lives of individuals with ALS. Although pouring buckets of ice water on our heads seems like a fun and lighthearted activity, we should keep in mind that the intended purpose of the challenge is to raise awareness for a serious and debilitating disease ... Not simply to participate in the latest social media frenzy. Thank you Stacey Feldman for nominating me to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. I nominate Julissa Thompson, Heidi Bai, Kimberly Roberts, Sara Izz, and Nicole Howley. Good luck ladies. :) #IceBucketChallenge
