An Evening Reflection: After several hectic weeks, I was able to return to the workout gym today. Carrying my Kindle and a bottle of water I made my way to the stationary bikes. The gym was busier than I remembered and I had to settle for a recumbent, rather than an upright bike. Then it occurred to me, it’s January and the New Year’s resolution goals of weight loss, better health habits and fitness had not yet worn off for people. When life gets hectic we also put a few worldly pounds onto our soul. What that means is we get busy and tired and don’t take the same care to guard our heart, mind and soul against the influence of the world. We let unwholesome talk sneak out of our mouths and fail to recognize it as unhealthy spiritual behavior. Instead of “doing something useful with our own hands…so we have “something to share with those in need” (Ephesians 4:28 NIV), we allow our hands to be idle. Perhaps we fail to be totally truthful, or we let anger get the better of us. Maybe we’ve even harbored rage, malice and bitterness in our hearts. Paul instructs us to get rid of all worldly baggage by “putting off the old self…to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 22, 24 NIV). Let the Holy Spirit work in your life to trim the fat of the world from your soul.
