An Evening of Warren Zevon for Rikki Hall Scruffy City Music Hall, Market Square (Knoxville, Tenn.) March 20, 2014, 7 p.m. COVER: $5 Scruffy City Hall The last time Warren Zevon appeared on the David Letterman Show, the musical master of dark tales and picaresque adventures was close to death from mesothelioma. Asked for some parting advice, Zevon’s laconic reply was: “Enjoy every sandwich.” Our friend Rikki Hall, a naturalist, environmental activist and Metro Pulse columnist, was diagnosed with a brain tumor about a year and a half ago. It recently was determined to be inoperable. For years, some in the Knoxville music scene have bandied about the idea of a tribute show for Zevon, arguably the most underappreciated songwriter of our time. Now, as we face mortality looming for our friend—and fellow Zevon fan—we consider a party to salute both men. Why not? A Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate who moved to Knoxville in the ‘80s, Hall used his journalistic skills to defend the environment and call out public officials. Before writing for Metro Pulse, he was a contributing editor for Hellbender, a groundbreaking environmental watchdog. Publication co-founder Thomas Fraser credits his friend with making Hellbender a presence in local publishing. “He is a great writer and motivator,” says Fraser, “… and an endless fount of natural history.” Hall is someone who could sing an entire Violent Femmes’ album around a campfire one night and take you on a woods walk the next day and identify every bug and bird. He talked up—perhaps not entirely as a joke—redrawing state borders based on major river watersheds. It figures the longtime Rockford and South Knox County resident would want proceeds from this event to benefit the Little River Watershed Association. Celebrating both Warren Zevon and Rikki Hall with an evening of macabre, hilarious and heart-breaking songs will be the Tim Lee 3, Greg Horne Band, Itchy Bruddah (Phil Fuson), the French, and Jack Rentfro and the Apocalypso Quartet. RB Morris, Kevin Abernathy, Chris Durman, Sonja Spell, and Daniel Kimbro will sing with a house band assembled from the Lee and Horne bands plus Hudson K’s Christina Horn and Nate Barrett. More guests are to be announced. Scott and Bernadette West volunteered Scruffy City Music Hall, their new venue on Market Square in downtown Knoxville, for this last-day-of-winter party.
