An Open Letter to The Governor of Kentucky Sir, Recently HSBC bank was convicted of laundering billions of dollars in drug money. A crime that should have resulted in seizure of the bank and the arrest and imprisonment of the bank Officers ended with a fine and NO ONE went to jail. Arrests for simple possession of marijuana on the other hand number as high as 750,000 a year with 9000 of those on average happening here in Kentucky. There are now 20 states with medical marijuana laws and 2 states have legalized marijuana for personal consumption. The American Civil Liberties Union has released a report that was summarized in the Kentucky Enquirer’s June 5, 2013 edition. The report shows that the prohibition of marijuana is carried out in the most blatantly racist fashion that one can imagine. Kentucky is one of the worst states in the region for this. In Kentucky Blacks are six times more likely than Whites to be arrested for marijuana possession. Two of the worst counties are right here in Northern Kentucky, Campbell and Kenton counties where it is ten times more likely you will be arrested if you are Black. Given this unjust and unjustifiable prosecution of marijuana users, the inability of the Federal Government to produce a clear policy regarding marijuana and the fact that most Americans favor ending marijuana prohibition in some form or another, I, and all Kentuckians who favor ending marijuana prohibition call on you Sir, to immediately do everything in your power to suspend any further arrests for simple possession of marijuana across the state until either our own Assembly can craft and pass a marijuana policy based on science and logic, or the Federal Government finally crafts a responsible marijuana policy. In military terms, please call a cease fire until the terms of the armistice can be worked out! Please move post haste as even one more of these arrests is an affront to freedom and the just rule of law. Thank You, The Citizens Of Kentucky
