An art judge or jurist should be capable of choosing and awarding art entries outwith their own personal area of expertise. I have seen two shows lately where the chosen award winners could have been painted by the judge/juror themselves. Surely a good judge should be capable of applying their knowledge of design and composition so that paintings outside the personal style of the judge would be considered for an award. I am not an abstract artist but the last show upset me because there were some wonderful out of the box paintings which were not honored while some pretty run of the mill ...but technically ok pieces got all the kudos.
