An editor I have worked before has written some sort of diary about Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi and the defeat, poking fun at the outgoing prime minister, and others. It makes me feel ashamed to be part of a tribe that doesnt understand the dignity of words, and of loss. We, for sure, switch sides easily. Heres the piece - economictimes.indiatimes/opinion/comments-analysis/secret-diary-of-sonia-gandhi-why-rahul-gandhi-finally-took-full-responsibility/articleshow/35232402.cms One of many. And how unfortunate. Is this journalism? Perhaps Rahul Gandhi is mediocre but it is not a crime to be one. What about a man who is not interested in power, and all we can do is laugh at him, blame him, and accuse him? He was always the reluctant prince. Maybe Rahul Gandhis politics is different. To blame him for having been born in the family shows a lack of empathy. Perhaps he didnt want to be part of politics but it was forced upon him, and his mother was unwell so he returned. He was the youth leader, and only two years ago, he became the vice president of the grand old party. Then, there was always the unfair comparison between him and his sister by those within the party and outside. They went through a lot. Why dont we ever consider the other side of this dynastic privilege? That of ridicule, and slander by those that think you chose to be born this way. He didnt marry, and despite his reluctance, he is there campaigning against the odds, and then admitting defeat. I am not a supporter of Congress. But I think as a journalist, we have been unfair, and biased in these elections. We have only ridiculed Rahul Gandhi, and others. Mostly. We have turned our job into propaganda. We have lost the dignity of our profession. Loss isnt a bad thing. For someone to win, someone has to lose. For someone who was dragged into this, and has to suffer this ridicule, I feel we can be more dignified in our commentary. And we wanted respect to be restored. Why dont we be a bit more respectful for a change? And not be such hypocritical people, and smile and congratulate the ONE. But why not write about the loss in an honest way rather than just being crass. As the conservatives say glory of the rich and what is bad about being born rich so why do we have different standards here. Rahul Gandhi didnt choose to be born in the dynasty. His father, and grandmother were killed. The family was forced into politics to save the Congress Party. Where we celebrate a chaiwallahs success, we should also respect the defeat of the what we have tagged as elite. So now, go ahead and ridicule me, and call me names, and say whatever.
