An elderly woman died this morning from injuries received in a house fire in Ashland. She was rescued from the blaze, which broke out after 5 a.m., by a neighbor, who is an off-duty Henrico firefighter. The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and died at 9:34 a.m. According to Battalion Chief Jason Williams, a fire that was reported at a house in the 12000 block of Cheroy Road in Ashland has been ruled accidental by the Hanover Fire Marshal’s Office. The probable cause is electrical. Williams said the fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Hanover Fire-EMS crews arrived at 5:45 a.m. where they found heavy fire and smoke pouring from the side and rear angle of the single-story home. “About 25 Fire-EMS personnel made a fast attack on the fire and were able to bring it under control in about 45 minutes,” Williams said. “Hanover Fire-EMS reminds you to have working smoke alarms on each floor of your home and outside of each sleeping area,” Williams added. He also said that Hanover Fire-EMS recommends that smoke alarms greater than 10 years old be replaced. Anyone requiring special assistance with smoke alarms should contact the Hanover Fire-EMS Department at 804-365-6195. If you live outside of Hanover County, you can call the Metro Richmond Smoke Alarm Hotline at 1-888-537-5967.
