An excellent blog from Lauren Fraser at Good Horsemanship about the suppression of behaviour problems. Yes, punishment often works in the short term, but is it the right way to deal with the problem? Almost certainly not! My favourite quote from the article is A good analogy to help you understand might be this: a chainsaw is a great tool for cutting things like trees, but not one I’d choose to cut my husband’s hair. It might be effective, but the chances that it won’t be pretty, or may even cause long term damage are high.
