An incredibly moving day today...Laurent took us to the American Expeditionary Forces monument at Mont-Sec,...honouring the contribution our forces made at the battle for the Saint-Mihiel Salient in 1918,...then we toured the battlefields of Verdun, including Fort Douamont, where the French and German armies fought long and bloody battles throughout the early years of the Great War,...but the most moving part of my day was at the Ossuary of Douamont, a citadel of sorts containing the bones and graves and names of 15000+ French soldiers killed there...you could actually view the bones, as they laid, through windows to the lower levels,...one window was enough,...inside the citadel itself, one could read the names of the dead, carved in the blocks its built from,...deeply moving, to the point of tears,...if I get to return to this area again, I will make it my personal mission to read each and every name carved there...
