An interesting article on political theatre! Actually, it all began in Greece. The very first play in existence, Aeschylus’s Persae, was political, since it aimed to bolster Athenian self-belief by showing Xerxes’s court lamenting the Persian defeat at Salamis. Euripides, though initially without political edge, came to make his feelings about his city’s bellicosity very clear, notably in his Trojan Women, a portrayal of slaughter some historians think was inspired by Athens’s destruction of the harmless island of Melos.
