An interesting take on the change in Cuba policy. I have mixed feelings on this. I do not think Cuba really represents a major strategic threat anymore as it did in the 60s, and especially during the Cuban Missile Crisis. We also trade plenty with other, and more egregious, human rights abusers (China anyone?). On the flipside, is there really any major strategic advantage? Perhaps, if we leverage it to show we want to trade and integrate Cuba into a South American zone of trade relations including us. But that is far from immediate and somewhat tangential to current exigencies. So is there a downside? I think yes, because it was done by this President. If done by a more aggressive leader without the baggage of Obama, this would be closer to a mini-Nixon to China move. In this environment, it looks like an ideologically infused surrender, not a geopolitical masterstroke. All that said, I do not think it is a disaster. A tempest in a tea cup more informed by Presidential politics than strategic imperatives either way.
