An open letter to all those who beLIEve there should not only BE a minimum wage, but that it should ALSO be a living wage, i. e., high enough to support the employee AND his/her family: Im going to assume that we ALL believe everyone should have the opportunity to get ahead if they so desire, and Im going to assume that many (but not ALL) people would grab that opportunity if it presented itself. Are we on the same page so far? Good! Heres where the DIVERGENCE occurs: YOU folks think we (and I do mean WE since, ultimately, all business costs are PASSED ON to the consumers!) should pay EVERYONE a living wage just because they do SOMETHING for 40 hours per week, even if that is simply flipping burgers or some OTHER job that can be done by any other uneducated, unmotivated, and uncaring person (or even a freaking MACHINE!), while I believe people should be reimbursed according to their value to their employer. In other words, we should NOT be encouraging people to be LIFELONG BURGER FLIPPERS when they COULD be much more productive citizens, and that is precisely WHY these sorts of jobs have always been considered entry level, and not LIFELONG EMPLOYMENT, and we CERTAINLY shouldnt be passing legislation to FORCE employers to pay their employees more than they are worth to the bottom line of the company, which, as I already pointed out, only leads to increased costs for the end consumer of the companys product(s)! In other words, if the business cannot run at a PROFIT due to the inflated wages paid to the employees (not to mention the inflated TAXES, governmental regulations costs, etc.), then WHY would anyone want to own or operate said business? If costs outweigh gains, any business will rightfully go BANKRUPT, and then EVERYONE is out of a job! Thats exactly what led to the downfall of the Soviet Union! When people realized they were NOT going to be paid more for getting a higher education, or learning a particular skill, or having a particular talent, or whatever, but would only be paid the same amount as someone doing the most easy (although menial) job, they all said TO HELL WITH IT and took the easy jobs themselves, and this is EXACTLY what will happen under YOUR plan to pay everyone a living wage for doing ANY sort of work for 40 hours per week! I will say it again: the BETTER solution is to get the GOVERNMENT the heck OUT of businesses, and let the business people do what they do best, which is to create jobs, which then create wealth for both themselves and their employees! That means cut the excessive (but not all) paperwork and the unnecessary (but not all) regulations, AND cutting the taxes of BOTH the employers AND the employees so they will HAVE the capital to start or grow their own businesses! Further, and for the love of God, STOP all the special programs that benefit the few immoral souls at the expense of the MANY who are trying to live righteous lives! THAT is the recipe to get this country going again, rather than finishing it off with even MORE governmental interference! Have you folks learned NOTHING from how the UNIONS destroyed DETROIT? They kept demanding more and more until they priced themselves right out of their jobs! Do you REALLY want that to happen NATIONWIDE?? Never forget that businesses are IN business to make a PROFIT, NOT to provide jobs for people who cant or wont start their own businesses! Seriously! Thats what businesses are meant to do! Im NOT kidding, and the sooner people REALIZE that, the better off we will be! If we keep thinking, as Walter Reuther did, that businesses are the goose that laid the golden egg, we are DOOMED to fail as a country just as the unions failed their membership in Detroit! By the way, everything I just said is BIBLICALLY SOUND, and if you have ANY DOUBTS whatsoever, I suggest you look no further than Matthew 20:1-16, in which the parable makes it CLEAR that the EMPLOYER has the right to pay his employees whatever amount he chooses, so long as he pays them AT LEAST the amount he PROMISED to pay them and for which they AGREED to work, and if he pays any employee anything over and above that, it would be out of the GENEROSITY OF HIS HEART, and NOT because of some governmental regulation!
