An open letter to the world @By Abderrahmane Alamrani Morocco World News Oujda, August 24, 2013 My Dear reader, What you are about to read is not entirely mine; I am inspired by many things I have read, heard and witnessed. I think adding my voice may change things; who knows, maybe. Today, at this moment you feel good; you think that you are safe and secure from the dangers of the world. Your daily routine provides you with a simple sense that everything is all right. We enjoy our days and our routines. It would be a lie to say otherwise, but in the spirit of remembrance, whereby we celebrate events of the past with a nice holiday, let me remind you that the fight for our freedom is never over. Sure, we do celebrate the independence of our nation from colonizers who seized our country and tried to deplete our nation’s natural resources, but, with independence, are we truly free? I thought we could mark this year’s independence by taking a moment and taking the time to really think about the world we live in. There are, of course, people who don’t want us to speak because words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. The truth is, there is something terribly wrong with the world, isn’t there? We live in a world with cruelty, injustice, intolerance, oppression, and corruption. Who is to blame? Well, certainly there are those more responsible than others; will they answer for their role in this? Maybe. But if you are looking for who is guilty, look at yourself. I understand why we are to blame. The world is scary, dangerous and you feel safer within the walls of your house at midnight than you could possibly be outside at that hour. That warm bed of yours, and the soft cozy blanket that feels good after a long day at work. You feel safe and secure and that’s important. There is a myriad of problems that conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear has got the very best of you, and in your panic you turn back to the way things have been before. Why am I saying all of this? Because change comes from the person you see in the mirror everyday. It’s as simple as that, and yet as hard as it can be, to change oneself is risky. Many things will go wrong, but one thing I’m sure of is our capacity to learn from our mistakes. Your silence now only feeds the monster in the closet. He doesn’t exist; only you feel that way. With this I seek to remind us of what we have forgotten: freedom from oppression and facing corruption at it highest level. Everyone counts; every voice ever spoken about it counts. Let us purge the bystander effect from our systems. If you see what I see, and feel what I feel, try and change who you are. Mistakes should be common knowledge not something we should avoid.
