Analysis of the Legislative District 2 Debate 9/17/14 Debate members: Republicans: John Chris Ackerley and Daniel Estrella Democrats: Andrea Dalessandro, Demion Clinco, Rosanna Gabaldon The debate was held at the Hilton Gardens, a hotel near Tucson International Airport in the heart of a large industrial area stretching south to the Mexican border. Much of our food and other supplies comes through this rail and freeway corridor. This is big business and we need representatives who understand the dynamics of the area. The new Guaymas Port of Entry is booming and we can tap into this boom if we have the right climate here in Southern Arizona. I found the atmosphere of the debate to be pleasant except for two appointed Democrats Dalessandro and Clinco who felt it necessary to blame Republicans for a dropoff in school funding during the recession, when Gov. Napolitano took off for greener pastures after saddling the state in billions of debt and unfunded liabilities, while dumping the whole mess in Gov. Brewer’s lap. Republican lawmakers were forced to handle the crisis, which resulted in cutbacks including schools out of necessity. To blame Republicans for that shows desperation on the part of the candidates, rather than reason. We need a better grasp of economics than that. John Chris Ackerley, Republican for State Representative showed his expertise with reason and words as he discussed improving education, having a practical grasp of Common Core problems and funding issues. Mr. Ackerley also showed knowledge of the economic system and the importance of business opportunities along with a long term plan of improving education. Appointed Democrat Rep. Demion Clinco did place blame for the economic downturn in educational funding on Republicans, which is erroneous. I feel he is a nice young man who could use some courses in practical economics, demographics and vital infrastructure before he represents people in the future. Elected Democrat Rep. Rosanna Gabaldon demonstrated knowledge of the area and an understanding of infrastructure and how it is related to jobs. She was calm and polite and appeared to be actually interested in her constituents. Appointed Democrat Sen. Andrea Dalessandro had little to say about the economy, but preferred to focus on the schools and the need for more money for the schools and blaming others for the economic downturn, rather than dealing with the aftermath. We don’t need officials who want more money for the schools before they want reform. She was the only candidate who made rude comments. Daniel Estrella Republican for State Senate, demonstrated a far superior understanding of LD 2 in a practical sense. His childhood ties, years of experience in the United States Marines, and National Guard Duty along the border show a unique understanding of the practical issues. Mr. Estrella also understands the importance of fewer restrictions on our freedom to open businesses and the need for the government to streamline the process for private enterprise. Our Republican candidates are far superior to the Democrat appointees. Vote for John Chris Ackerley, Daniel Estrella and Rosanna Gabaldon for effective, caring leadership in Legislative District 2. -Dorothy Prater Niemi 9/17/2014
