Sitting in How Do You Do this afternoon and surrounded by Mothers - TopicsExpress

Sitting in How Do You Do this afternoon and surrounded by Mothers of all ages I couldnt help thinking what big business this day, and motherhood in general has become. My mum was never that bothered if we forgot Mothers Day, in fact, she expected it. She knew we all thought she was the best because we used to tell her all the time. I hope she remembered this and took our love with her when she jumped off Scotswood Bridge thirty years ago. Yes I feel maternity these days has become absorbed by an all-conquering female narcissism. 1950s movie goddesses would hide their children in case it diminished their allure. Now a hot starlet phase is followed by the Milf* years - a parade of tots as gorgeous as their mum, proof of her beauty at a deeper genetic level. Motherhood has been sold as a martyrdom - surely that was terminated by on line grocery shopping and CBeebies? And what about non-mothers? You know the Bridget Jones. The ones who waste their fertile years, who will die unloved and unwanted, and alone. The ones who put up with 100s of identical Instagram kids portraits, who have to let moody kids board aircraft before them , who have to work over Xmas so mothers can take time off, for not smashing the TV every time a politician mentions hard working families as the only unit of political worth, for the knowing smirks when they buy a cat, for child advice being ignored. For all this have a lovely day non-mothers. * Milf = Mum Id Love to F--k
