Ancient Maiden Castle secrets revealed: Secrets from the Sky [ITV, Friday 7/11/14, 8pm] An Archaeologist and British pre-history expert from Cardiff University is to feature in Secrets from the Sky, a new ITV series in which historian Bettany Hughes and aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson present a unique look at Britains past by taking to the air in a bid to unlock secrets hidden in the landscape. Professor Niall Sharples of the University’s School of History, Archaeology and Religion appears in the third programme in the latest series on Friday 7 November. The expert in British pre-history joins the programme at the massive ancient monument known as Maiden Castle. On site in Dorset, aerial investigation reveals a story of prehistoric life, death and survival in the 500 years before the Romans invaded Britain. Prof Sharples said: ‘This site is one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Britain and demonstrates how sophisticated our ancient ancestors were.’ Niall is author of the English Heritage book of Maiden Castle and has published widely on British prehistory, especially the Iron Age. He provides an account of the excavations at Maiden Castle in the 1980s and considers how interpretation of the site has changed dramatically in recent years. We now have a clearer appreciation of the social significance of the gigantic earthworks and can understand the importance the site had in bringing together large numbers of people to form a densely packed, possibly urban settlement he adds. Awaiting details of availability for viewers in Wales - will post as soon as confirmed. ow.ly/DRujD
