And Model 2nd birthday today has reminded me that I wrote this 2 years ago. I feel its still very important. 23:01:13 A TRIUMPH! There hasn’t been a city centre contemporary art space in Leeds since St Paul’s Gallery closed its doors in the late 1980’s. I had a studio with Leeds Art Space Society, in the East Street building (NOT East Street Arts, we were there long before). There were also painting studios in the rear of St Paul’s too. I showed there, ‘The Little Naturalist’, in the years before it gave up the ghost. That feels like an age away and in fact for some, it is. Today something wonderful happened. & model opened for its first day of trading. It’s a brand new gallery space; a stone’s throw from The Henry Moore Institute; you can even wave/flip a finger to the City Art Gallery from one of the many windows too! For someone of my generation this is very significant event. Leeds is one of the biggest cities in the UK. It has wonderful theatres, a new arena soon and prides (!) itself in having Harvey Nic’s. For over twenty years now there has been an enormous gap; that is, the lack of city centre, easily accessible contemporary art space. At last, that changed today. I urge you to support and cherish this space. In fact, don’t just show up at openings for a free glass of merlot, join forces, hold hands and form a ring to celebrate and wish it a successful future.
