And candidate gene studies (12, 13) have recently identified one gene variant that exhibits positive correlation or similarity between friends (homophily) and another variant that exhibits negative correlation or dissimilarity (heterophily). It remains unclear, however, whether this phenomenon extends to multiple genotypes across the whole genome, and it is not known what role genotypic correlation may have played in human evolution.
