And it feels like home and it knocks me out, just to feel this way and know I broke out - Newton Faulkner Ian Gawler, Order of Australia Member, long-time meditation practitioner and teacher, cancer survivor and amputee, author, and founder of The Gawler Foundation and man with one of the most heart-warming, contagious and genuine smiles I have seen, explained in a workshop yesterday that there are 2 aspects of mind. the active mind (the mind that plans, criticises, judges, analyses etc that we know so well and spend most of our time engaging with) and; stillness of mind He described meditation as the process by which we go past engaging with the active mind to the still aspect of mind. He described 3 major benefits; 1. Profound peace 2. Natural balance of mind and body whereby we are restored to what he considers our factory settings 3. The view - in which he touched on our innate capacity for compassion and gratitude coming to the fore, which he described as a catalyst for social activism There are so many ways to get started with meditation, with some ideas on this site for books and cds and courses on offer. Do you like the idea of breaking out of the active mind and finding your home... even if only for a moment? Surely you deserve it!
