Solitude is the price of greatness. -Paramahansa Yogananda- Solitude is one of the most time-honored practices for spiritual unfolding. If you dont think there is any spiritual test in solitude, i suggest you try it for an extended period. Most people are in the worldly arena due to the compulsion of unfulfilled desire. One of those desires is loneliness, the need of companionship and the desire to be given value by others. The world is a very distracting place where we cannot face this loneliness, where we distract ourselves from facing the greatest fear, fear of death, of annihilation of the ego sense, of persona, i.e. the mask we wear so that others dont see us, and we dont know our own Self. Invariably, some of the greatest contributions to evolving civilizations have come from those who have had the courage to stand alone, to go into solitude and uncover the hidden Treasure within, Shiva on Mt. Kailash, Jesus in the wilderness, Muhammed on the mountain, Buddha under the Bodhi Tree, etc.
