And now, the final enigma is solved: I know what was missing from my whole life in Louisiana. Sledding. I took my two little girls up to the barrens, now thick with 6 feet of snow, to sled. Few things are more exhilarating than going airborne in a sled. Few things more jolting than what happens when the ground claims what belonged to it just a few seconds before. Sliding downhill on my belly, face-first, arms splayed out to the side, thats a grand perspective. Taking a face full of snow at high speed is another kind of perspective. Its just great to gain speed and blast away down a hill, but a real fresh hell when you have to walk back up the hill afterwards. Exhausting, but incredibly fun. Oh, and the Welcome to Maine, New Resident! Brochure didnt mention this, but there are sudden drop-offs in snow, which you cant see when youre heading straight at them (they are perfectly visible from the side.) Once youve suddenly plunged, youre also suddenly moving much faster. And sleds dont stay straight, they turn for no good reason. No one tells you these things. But that really only makes the whole experience more badass, not less. Everyone should do this at least once. Physically, I feel like I just encountered the Ferguson Police Department, but overall, I had a very fun time.
