And so we come to the end of our holiday through some of the loveliest parts of South Africa. We started by crossing the desolate but fascinating Northern Cape into the Springbok Hills still clothed in a faint hint of spring flowers the tawny hills bathed in the soft hues of sunset. Franschhoek (with its humongous hedge of ever changing Drakenstein Mountain range) was explored in the company of a beloved friend. A wedding out of the pages of a glossy magazine full of friendship and laughter on an exquisite wine estate specialising in organic veg. My kind of place. More much loved friends. Lunch with my sister and a famous movie star. Great to realize i was more excitwd to be with her than him. The road through Klein Karoo to Knysna took 11 hours to do 400 km because we had to stop at every padstalitjie. Dramatic sea scapes and lagoons in the garden route. A meader over obscure passes and through the prosaic Langeberg on the R62 to Grahamstown for an impromptu stop with friends for lamb, laughter and valiable farming lessons. Home via the Eastern Free State with endless skies, dramatic sandstone mountains and the towering Maluti mountains protecting Lesuto in the distance. More Padstalitjies. We ate too much laughed a lot and remembered why we still like each other after 37 years. Travelling about 9000 km cost a fortune in my fabulous but hungry little car but gosh it was worth it.
