"And what does sterilization entail? The USDA gave growers several options, including steam pasteurization, irradiation via ionization, roasting, blanching and propylene oxide (PPO) pasteurization. What’s problematic for consumers is that there is no label requirement to specify exactly which treatment was used. And when it comes to PPO, you want to know. It is a known carcinogen, and most countries, including the European Union, have banned imported nuts that have been treated with PPO. It’s usually used to make plastic, but the Environmental Protection Agency says that PPO poses no health risk, and the Almond Board of California (ABC) states that “PPO residue dissipates after treatment”."
