And what is the mystery bird? This was a challenging one--even for staff! Characteristics to notice: the thicker longer bill (but not conical like a grosbeak); the wings have fresh colvert feathers (the tips of the colvert feathers on the wings are still brown--this typically wears off) so therefore being mid-July probably right out the nest; there is a hint of blue on the wings; slight wing bars are visible; and notice a hint of separation between the chest and the belly which is not streaked. The answer is: an immature male Lazuli Bunting!
