Andy Coulson former editor of the News of the World and Tory Prime Minster David Camerons media guru inside Number 10 has been found guilty in the long running Phone Hacking trial at the Old Bailey. And former News International executive Rebekah Brooks was found innocent. Calling her a Witch or questioning her guilt after she has been found innocent by a jury bodes ill for us who seek real democracy, genuine North East West South N.E.W.S. reporting, our legal system which is the envy of the world, and often its model, and ultimately a accountable political process. As a former television journalist and what can be called a left-wing Spin-Doctor, whose ex-boss is the man who started the whole expose, Nick Davis [see link below], of the phone hacking scandals, I might know of what im about to write. People will complain Well, only one person was found guilty and £100M of taxpayers money was spent to get this. Name calling of Rebekah Brooks or questing her guilt misses the point. 5 people out of eight arrested in the current batch pleaded guilty before the trial began. What was revealed by the trail and the public inquiry, the Leveson Inquiry, revealed, and confirmed in the Hacking trial, that there were over 5500 victims of hacking. Some well known celebrities were hacked repeatedly many hundreds of times. That the law was broken many many times and top Police Officers, and senior Politicians had a corrupt, or potentially corrupt relationship with hackers and their bosses. It would be a mistake and a distraction to smear the main , alleged, conspirators in this sorry talisman series of events. Murdoch and Ms Brooks might try to claim Victory with headlines and lavish parties...but the victory is hollow and short lived. What has been exposed over this trial and the public inquiry was the malicious abuse of power of the media and our legal & political systems. For millions of newspaper readers and media watchers we have a the real victory as vile abuse, like the hacking of 14-year-old Milly Dowlers phone after she was dead, was exposed. And will be continue to be as more investigations, trial and convictions take place over the coming years. Power, the unseen power of the media the pernicious relationship in political parties and the police has changed by this trial. If we call one person a witch, or worse, it misses the ultimate target and devalues us who need to be innocent till proven guilty. The distraction of personalized abuse can only harm us.
