Animal Welfare Approved just put out this great press release about our farm. Were blushing and just hope we can live up to the high expectations! --------------------------------------- For Immediate Release Contact: Andrew Gunther (202) 415-6568 [email protected] AnimalWelfareApproved.org LONG DREAM FARM IN LINCOLN, CA, AWARDED TOP ANIMAL WELFARE CERTIFICATION --First farm in Placer County to earn prestigious Animal Welfare Approved welfare and sustainability certification-- LINCOLN, CA (January 14, 2015)--The herd of dairy cattle and flock of laying hens at Long Dream Farm are now certified as Animal Welfare Approved. This certification and food label lets consumers know these animals are raised in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards in the U.S. and Canada, using sustainable agriculture methods on an independent family farm. Long Dream Farm is the first Certified AWA farm in Placer County. Like other AWA farmers across the country, Krista and Andrew Abrahams recognize the growing consumer interest in how animals are raised on farms. Managing animals outdoors on pasture or range has known benefits for animals, consumers and the environment. After years of research and planning, the Abrahams family took the plunge and moved from the East Coast in 2011 to establish a farm. They settled in Lincoln, CA, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a 90-acre property made up of rolling hills, oak and pine trees, and a pristine creek, and named their family venture Long Dream Farm. The Abrahams manage a herd of 90 dairy cattle and a flock of 1,000 laying hens, working an additional 280 acres on the Bear River. The couple has focused on developing the highest-welfare dairy operation possible, aiming to provide a very low stress environment for both animals and humans. To this end, the Abrahams use a practice that is nearly unheard of in the dairy industry: They leave calves with mother cows for as long as possible and milk the cows only once a day. Ensuring their chickens and cattle have access to pasture year-round is key to the farms high-welfare system and sustainability: Fortunately, we live in a climate where all our animals can be outside year around, says Andrew Abrahams. It makes the animals happier and healthier, and their milk and eggs taste better as a result. Research shows that pasture-raised eggs contain three times as much vitamin E, seven times more beta-carotene, and twice the omega-3 fatty acids as industrial eggs. The Abrahams are proud to be Certified AWA: When we were introduced to AWA through another local farm, it was immediately clear that we were largely consistent with AWA practices, and that AWA would push us harder in directions we wanted to go-like getting chicks out on pasture as early as possible, Andrew Abrahams explains. By making Long Dream Farm economically viable while adhering to the highest welfare standards, the Abrahams hope other independent family farms will follow. AWA Program Director Andrew Gunther says, The accountability and integrity offered by Animal Welfare Approved farmers like Krista and Andrew are unmatched in food production. Were glad to have Long Dream Farm in the AWA family. Long Dream Farms chicken eggs are available directly from the farm (call first), as well as at retail locations and restaurants in the Sacramento area and throughout Placer County. They expect to begin selling dairy products in 2015. To learn more about Long Dream Farm, visit longdreamfarm, or contact the Abrahams at info@longdreamfarm or (916) 543-0758.
