Animals in Uniform Animal Transport (AT) Company in which I was posted was located near two AT Batallions. COs (Colonels) of these Batallions always tried to interfere in our affairs as my OC was a major. He was at his wits end deflecting their demands and diktats. One day when he was particularly harassed hearing to one of the CO’s about damage to their kitchen garden that was done by our few mules gone astray; I in a lighter vein gave him a suggestion. I suggested that we go for an ashavamedha yagna like Lord Rama. We will do the pooja and let loose a decorated horse. If they had guts let them stop the horse and we will teach them a lesson. Otherwise, if the horse comes back, our supremacy will be established in the area. I was aghast when I found that he had taken my advise literally as he was discussing the yagna with our Religious Teacher (Unit Panditji) the next day. To my relief, Panditji dissuaded him by saying “Saheb, hamari samajh se yeh yagna uchit nahin rehaga.”
