Annie and Robert Wilson photographed outside the great door gave the following account of the Grotto in 1875 Most of the stairs and timberwork is constructed from ships timber complete with open caulking holes. Even the dancing salon measuring 75 by 24 the flooring and orchestra are portions of wrecks. The door is cut out of a ships rudder studded thickly with ships nails while the heavy iron ring of an anchor serves as knocker. I could not ascend a step without grasping portions of masts or clinging to a porthole, while figureheads met me at every turn.
