Annika Banko paintings evoke an emotionality that becomes evident in her brushstrokes and palette. She uses the gestural methods and expressive color of abstract expressionism to convey her responses to life and nature. Her technique alludes to a mental space beyond the pictorial. Over the years, she developed a dynamic style in which she emphasized loose forms and a prismatic richness of color. She has also mastered the patience necessary to achieve her desired effects. Hers is a virtuoso performance of controlled spontaneity. Although the final appearance of her composition retains the brilliance of bold gesturalism , Annika Banko has understood the advantage of waiting, sometimes for days on end, so that passages of thick paint will dry before painting bold gestural strokes over them. The use of large palette knifes, handled with precision, produce dramatic changes that rival the punctuation of dry-brushed areas . “Action painting” is the key element in Banko’s work, she approach the canvas directly, without a plan of action. She basically threw out the idea of using a paintbrush to apply the paint, she use her entire body to create the work, her paintings mysteriously hold a power that moves the observer. She say ! I am definitely an active painter in the sense that I do not use an easel, but instead, I laid the framed canvas on the floor of my studio, constantly moving around it, working from each side and angle, until the painting is complete. Working in this manner allows me the freedom to engage in the piece in its entirety and not from just one perspective . Using layers of paint applied with numerous tools, adds to the physicality of my process, and helps me connect with the composition. My work explores the moments of everyday life, and how we respond to them. The abstract composition allows for freedom of interpretation, and my hope is that it affords the viewer an experience as unique as their own life story . I chose expression over perfection, vitality over finish, fluctuation over repose, the unknown over the known, the veiled over the clear, the individual over society, and inner over the outer.” My ideas come from my imagination in a completely improvisational, passionate way, . I like to “ listen “ to how the paint wants to move. Expressing myself on canvas softens my desire to change and accept life’s journey on it’s own terms. Gerard Marti
