Anonymous Question: Hello, I really need some help. My wife was diagnosed with bipolar as a child. She hasnt taken any meds for it in over 15 years, but has managed to lead a pretty productive life. I didnt understand the illness at all until I started reading this book called The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide by David J. Miklowitz. Now I see signs from the past where she was having an episode but I just thought she was being moody or suffering from depression. Any ways, she seems to be bipolar disorder II. She has many small cycles basically all of the time. Now, due to financial problems, her loss of job, her having a double misectomy, her mother passing on our sofa while my wife was recovering from the misectomy, and our 22 year old son moving 3 hours away all within this year, she has really hit the manic stage. She also started an affair with a guy and is convinced that she would be better off living alone. I was extremely hurt at first, but now that I understand bipolar much better, all I want to do is help her. Due to her manic state of mind she cant see the irrational behavior. She has been put on a medicine that starts with an L but its not lithium. She has talked to a psychiatrist a couple of times but no evident progress so far. She doesnt have any family close by except me and our 10 year old daughter. I am trying to convince her that she needs to forgive herself for the things she has done while being manic. She has stopped communicating with th he other guy, as far as I know, but she still resist blocking him on Facebook and blocking his phone number. I feel that his presence at any level during this time is damaging to her and her current mental state, not to mention my own feelings. I just feel that she wont be able to forgive herself or move forward until she cuts all ties with this individual. How can I convince her that cutting all ties with him is the first step to getting back to her base line?
