The Music of Johann Strauss Jnr with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jeremy Silver. Soloists: Sally Silver (soprano) Sandile Mabaso (tenor) Christopher Duigan (piano) The Pietermaritzburg City Hall will once again come to life with the magnificent music of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and the music of the Johann Strauss Jnr. when Viennese Nights takes to the stage on Saturday 22 February. Presented by Parklane SUPERSPAR in association with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and Christopher Duigans Music Revival, Viennese Nights sees South Africas premier orchestra and featured soloists perform a sparkling evening of music under the baton of visiting British conductor, Jeremy Silver. In response to many requests for a performance of the popular music of the Waltz King - Johann Strauss Jnr., this performance in the City Hall will certainly be a dream come true for ex-Pietermaritzburg schoolgirl, Sally Silver. Now pursing a highly successful career based in London, Silver was inspired to pursue a career in music after attending KZNPO performances in the local City Hall thirty years ago. She will be singing a selection of operetta by Strauss (from Die Fledermaus), Puccini and Lehar with her husband at the podium. KZN-born tenor Sandile Mabaso, who started singing with the Drakensberg Boys Choir, makes his debut with the KZNPO following a successful period of study in London. Christopher Duigan will once again be featured at the piano in this performance. Playing Franz Liszts Piano Concerto No 1 Duigan who is acknowledged as one of the countrys foremost concert pianists will put the piano through its paces. Franz Liszt, born in the small village of Raiding in 1811, part of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire, remains the unchallenged super virtuoso of the piano. His two Piano Concertos were conceived as a large scale vehicles for publicly display of his skills as pianist and composer. Replacing the annual Last Night of the Maritzburg Proms, Viennese Nights seeks to capture a similar sophisticated and light-hearted mood and will include celebrated Strauss orchestral favourites; Tratsch-Tratcsh Polka, Radetsky March, Voices of Spring and the evergreen The Blue Danube. Audience members are invited to dress elegantly to set the tone for the evening. Tickets include refreshments served at interval.
